Employees
Conlon's reputation for workmanship and service is demonstrated by the dedicated team of professional staff and directly employed skilled craftsmen. Over the past 45 years we have been able to retain a stable, loyal workforce and it is our intention to maintain our reputation as a good employer within the industry and the local community. We currently employ over 100 full-time staff, two thirds of whom are based on site and in our joinery manufacturing facility. The average length of service of our office and management staff is 14 years, whilst that of on-site craftsmen and operatives is 13 years.
The company employs its own time-served joiners and bricklayers on site together with a number of general operatives. Overseeing the craftsmen and labourers at site level are the Conlon Construction Site Managers, a group of highly experienced individuals, mostly from a trade background. Site Managers work in co-ordination with the Quantity Surveyors and Contracts Managers to manage the safe and efficient execution of projects. They are assisted by a team of experienced finance, administration and technical staff based at our offices in Preston and Manchester.

Apprentices
In 2002, we decided to increase our intake of apprentices and set ourselves a target of 10% of the workforce. Currently, apprentices represent 20% of our site-based employees and 11% of the workforce as a whole. It is our intention to maintain this level in view of the expected future skills shortages within the industry. It is also our philosophy to keep to a minimum any agency labour, preferring to recruit directly to ensure that those we employ are committed to the company and it's clients.
Training
We actively support the achievement of professional qualifications and encourage and support self-development in the wider sense e.g. IT skills, mangement development as well as CPD activities. We have taken advantage of the Training Plan for CITB funding which had resulted in funding being made available for all employee groups for a wider range of training activity including partnering, customer service and team building. Over the past three years the average number of training days per employee was 7.6 and we are planning to maintain this level in the future.
